Western Illinois University grad and an Alumni of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music  https://www.oldtownschool.org  and seasoned professional musician with 7 albums on Itunes and Television and Radio Airplay.

Robert Simkus' early life was marked with a house full of music. With three older sisters and younger brother, music from Yes, Led Zeppelin, Styx, Boston, Elton John, Black Sabbath, Bad Co., and many others and the pop hits of the 60's and 70's could be heard coming from their bedrooms. Every bedroom had a stereo record player and different music was always coming from every room. What is now known as 'classic' was new and fresh.

Remarkably, new ears and new generations love this same music after a listen or two. There was excitement when a new Led Zeppelin album came out...or Boston...or KISS. Those were the days.

Robert's  early love of music was briefly sidelined while he pursued sports throughout high school and into college. An all-star baseball player in Chicago's semi-pro leagues, Robert put to use his Carol Stream little league training. After a few unsuccessful tryouts with the KC Royals and other teams Robert retreated to music after a neighbor asked him for guitar lessons. Sports are still a part of his life. You may catch him playing for a local softball team or biking on the prairie path.

In 1990, and after a few years of being out of college in the real world Robert rekindled his love affair with music and the guitar. After the neighbor asked for guitar lessons, the referrals kept coming in and Robert had more and more students.

Working out of his house and at the local music schools, Robert maintained 50 students or more per week. Finally, around 2005, he decided to strike out on his own and teach private guitar lessons . Being successful in education and teaching music has been a rewarding journey that will only get better with his new musical home at DuPage Rock Music School.

In September 2019, Robert's journey in musical education is growing and expanding it's reach. With the opening of DuPage Rock Music School, we hope to serve the community with a quality musical education.

Robert welcomes you to our musical family!

"To me it feels as if Robert teaches because he truly enjoys helping others achieve their musical goals, and to me that makes all the difference. "

Beth Kaplan Available for piano, voice, guitar and ukulele lessons starting in March Thursdays 4pm to 9pm

image65

Northwestern University grad ,  National-Louis University with a Master’s in elementary Education and seasoned professional musician,

We are thrilled to announce that as of Fall 2019, Beth Kaplan will be joining us as our new Piano Guitar and Voice teacher.

Growing up in New York gave her tremendous opportunities to experience all kinds of music, and her love for music began over 50 years ago.

She started piano lessons at 4, taught herself to play the guitar at 7, and has been singing since 3, though she didn’t begin formal vocal training until she was 12. (Her mom is a concert pianist, still, at 84!) After graduating from Northwestern University in 1980, she performed at local clubs, bars and restaurants in the Chicago area. She eventually joined a series of bands where she was both the lead vocalist and the keyboard player, and this is where she honed her unique vocal style and her ability to sing anything from Ella Fitzgerald to Prince.

She continued studying voice with Doug Susumago for an additional 10 years. . At 32 she graduated from National-Louis University with a Master’s in Elementary Education that included endorsements in writing, social science, and of course, music. While teaching in Bellwood School District 88 for 22 years, she directed 44 student musical productions, and taught kids between 4 and 14 that anyone can learn to sing and dance. From 1998 to  2002 she ran the music program at McKinley School. She continued performing in the Chicago area herself, and many of her teaching colleagues routinely attended her performances.

It was during her tenure at District 88  that Beth developed her special teaching  style.

Believing all children can learn, she uses a variety of techniques to instill a love for music for each student based on the type of music which interests them the most. Music should be fun, even during a  lesson. Her encouraging, loving, yet firm approach allows children to have fun, all while they develop proper breath and pitch control, correct diction, appropriate dynamics, and experience in a variety of musical genres. They also develop the performance confidence they’ll need should they choose a career in music.

In 2015 Beth switched to working as a music specialist for preschoolers. In the Fall of 2017, she was recruited by Child’s Voice for the Hearing Impaired as both the vocal coach and the music teacher. She helps the students learn to use their voices so they can function in the hearing world, and gets them singing and  dancing. “To be an effective children’s music teacher you have to be willing to be silly,” she says, smiling from ear to ear. She still directs student performances. The most recent one at Child’s Voice was streamed live to Facebook on Dec.21 and was a huge success.

She’s been teaching in the Chicago area and suburbs since 1991, and also teaches voice and piano for Artreach Educational Theater in Rolling Meadows.

When Beth was about 7, if you asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up her answer was, “why a rock and roll star of course.” Ask her the same question now and you might just get the same answer.

"Beth helped me improve beyond what I thought was possible."

Daughters learned piano with Ellie

Though my girls have been singing in church their whole lives they have never played the piano. Ellie was wonderful at teaching basics and proper technique and the workbooks and notes she took helped us to practice efficiently during the week. She is patient and talented and had them playing whole songs within a month! Amazing!  5 stars!

We really loved having Ellie as a piano teacher.

We really loved having Ellie as a piano teacher. She was super sweet and patient with my girls (ages 12 and 5). They came to her as total brand new beginners and I am astounded by their growth in just a few short months! I wasn’t totally sure my 5 year old was ready for piano lessons but she really blossomed under Ellie’s teaching style and patience. I can’t recommend Ellie’s piano lessons enough and can’t say enough great things about her!

Elioenai made the experience a very comfortable one

As an adult I wanted something that would challenge me creatively and push me out of my comfort zone, so I tried piano lessons with Elioenai Toscano. I felt a little intimidated by taking piano lessons for the first time because I am older. Elioenai made the experience a very comfortable one; she was very patient with me. I would highly recommend getting out your comfort zone and try some lessons with her, you will not regret it.
